Scientists routinely measure a fuel's upper and lower flammability limits to determine fuel performance, handling, and safety.

Essential to providing robust and environmentally friendly automotive fuel systems is an understanding of:

  • Fuel properties

  • Material compatibility

  • Component capabilities

Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) engineers evaluate fuel-delivery components and systems with respect to a wide range of emissions and safety issues. SwRI provides the following services:

  • Helium- and fuel-leakage testing

  • Hot-fuel handling

  • Permeation testing

  • Vapor management

  • Canister testing

  • Hydrocarbon compound analyses

  • Upper and lower flammability limit determinations
