Using comprehensive instrumentation of a scale-model tunnel in a fractured medium, CNWRA® engineers develop insight into the stability of underground openings and the computer codes used to design such openings.

Performance assessment services at Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) include integrated performance, safety, and risk assessments of radioactive and toxic waste disposal systems in complex environmental settings, and the development of computational tools for evaluating myriad uncertainties and their effects on system performance.

Environmental Consequence Evaluations

Performance assessments are used to evaluate potential environmental and public health risks from waste disposal systems prior to their construction, and to support characterization and remediation of existing disposal systems that may produce adverse environmental impacts. These assessments provide a valuable tool for identifying the system components and uncertainties that are most significant to total system performance.

Performance, safety, and risk assessments are supported by state-of-the-art computer modeling facilities and staff with broad experience and capabilities in:

  • Development of computational software

  • Mathematical modeling

  • Dose-pathway modeling

  • Dose reconstruction

  • Probabilistic analysis

  • Safety criticality (nuclear)

  • Radiation shielding

  • Radiation health physics

  • Engineering

  • Earth and environmental sciences

  • Computational fluid dynamics
