Pine Bluff Chemical Agent Disposal Facility (PBCDF)

Pine Bluff Chemical Agent Disposal Facility is a multi-year effort under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Industrial Operations Command.

The chemical warfare stockpile at Pine Bluff Arsenal has been declared obsolete because of age and condition. The U.S. Congress directed the U.S. Army to destroy munitions and storage tanks filled with nerve and blister agents through environmentally safe techniques.

SwRI staff members conduct ambient-air and stationary source sampling, analyze air pollutants, conduct analytical chemistry tests, and maintain chemical-agent monitoring systems in support of the U.S. Army’s program. The prime contractor, URS, is responsible for operating and maintaining the destruction facility. The 100 SwRI employees working at the PBCDF achieved 10 years without a lost time accident and five years without a recordable injury.
